Een nieuw (school)jaar

In Zimbabwe start komende week (12 januari) het nieuwe schooljaar.
Op de Durlstone primary school starten nieuwe kleuters, de oudere kinderen gaan naar grade 7 en een deel van de grade 7 leerlingen van afgelopen jaar zal starten op Howgate secondary school.

n Zimbabwe (net als in andere Afrikaanse landen) gaan de leerlingen 3 maanden naar school, dan een maand vakantie, weer 3 maanden school, enz. Tussendoor is er geen vakantie en slechts een enkele vrije dag. Bijvoorbeeld op 21 februari, dan is het Robert Gabriel Mugabe National Youth Day.

Voor veel gezinnen en leerlingen is het een spannende tijd. Het is een spannende tijd omdat het schoolgeld betaald moet worden: $50 of $60 per 3 maanden school.
Leerlingen die op school starten of naar een andere school gaan zullen ook hun schooluniform moeten aanschaffen. Schooluniformen zijn verplicht en vanuit de overheid worden scholen erop gecontroleerd. Vaak gaat de schoolkleding van de oudere broer of zus naar de volgende. En dat is te zien. 
Als het schoolgeld aan het begin van de termijn niet is betaald mogen de leerlingen vaak wel beginnen. Als het aan het eind van de eerste maand maar betaald is of een regeling is afgesproken. Gebeurt dat niet, dan worden kinderen naar huis gestuurd. Dit is echt een heel vervelend moment. Voor de kinderen en de teams van de scholen.
 
Ik hoop dat het een mooi schooljaar wordt voor alle kinderen en de teams van de Durlstone en Howgate!

In Zimbabwe, the new school year starts next week (January 12th).

New kindergarteners will start at Durlstone Primary School, the older children will move on to Grade 7, and some of last year's Grade 7 students will start at Howgate Secondary School.

In Zimbabwe (as in other African countries), students attend school for three months, then a month's holiday, then another three months of school, and so on. There are no holidays in between, and only a few days off. For example, February 21st is Robert Gabriel Mugabe National Youth Day.

For many families and students, this is an exciting time. It's an exciting time because school fees have to be paid: $50 or $60 per three months of school.

Students who start at the school or transfer to another school will also need to purchase their school uniforms. School uniforms are mandatory, and the government monitors schools for compliance. Often, the school uniforms of an older sibling are passed on to the next. And it shows. If school fees aren't paid at the beginning of the term, students are often allowed to start. As long as they're paid by the end of the first month or a settlement has been agreed upon. If this isn't the case, children are sent home. This is a truly frustrating time for the children and the school teams.
