We waren op vakantie op Rhodos. Daar komen we inmiddels behoorlijk wat jaartjes en de mensen die we er kennen vertellen e ook over Zimbabwe, De meeste mensen zijn geïnteresseerd en vinden het een goede reden voor ons om niet 2x per jaar naar Rhodos te komen. Een vraag die we vaak krijgen (overigens ook in Nederland): is het wel veilig, is het niet gevaarlijk?
Ja, het is veilig! Wij hebben ons nog geen enkele keer onveilig gevoeld of iets vervelends meegemaakt. Dat kan te maken hebben met de regio waar we zijn.
In hoofdzaak denk ik dat het in Zimbabwe niet anders is dan in Nederland en Griekenland. In Harare zullen er vast en zeker wijken zijn waar je beter niet kunt komen. Net als in Amsterdam en Athene. En ook daar moet je op je spullen letten.
Meestal komt in zo'n gesprek ook naar voren dat Afrika meer is dan Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is geen Zuid-Sudan of Congo. En in het gebied waar wij verblijven zijn ook nauwelijks gevaarlijke dieren. Wel in andere delen van het land en in andere landen in de regio, zoals Zuid-Afrika.
Rhodos is ook niet heel Griekenland of Europa. Maar dat is dicht bij huis. Dat weten we. Afrika is iets verder van ons bed en dan is het wat lastiger om de verschillen of nuances te zien. We hebben er een beeld van in ons hoofd. Vaak een algemeen beeld en stereotiep. Om dat beeld te verbeteren en te laten zien welke stereotypen gebruikt worden is er Africa No Filter. We were on vacation in Rhodes. We have been coming there for quite a few years now, and the people we know there also tell us about Zimbabwe. Most people are interested and consider it a good reason for us not to come to Rhodes twice a year. A question we often get (incidentally, also in the Netherlands): is it safe, isn't it dangerous?
Yes, it is safe! We haven't felt unsafe or experienced anything unpleasant even once. That may have to do with the region where we are.
Mainly, I think that Zimbabwe is no different than the Netherlands and Greece. In Harare, there will undoubtedly be neighborhoods where it is better not to go. Just like in Amsterdam and Athens. And there, too, you have to watch your belongings.
Usually, in such a conversation, it also comes up that Africa is more than Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is not South Sudan or Congo. And in the area where we are staying, there are hardly any dangerous animals. There are, however, in other parts of the country and in other countries in the region, such as South Africa. Rhodes isn't all of Greece or Europe either. But that is close to home. We know that. Africa is a bit further afield, and it is somewhat harder to see the differences or nuances.
